Color Coordinated in Netscape

Top

A large part of the information about color on this page was borrowed from a lecture that Daniel Berleant posted a couple of years ago and I edited it and changed it around a bit to fit my taste.

You may have to adjust the brightness and/or contrast controls on your monitor. If your monitor is set to dark or without enough contrast, you won't get much out of this lecture because some of the ideas won't be visible to you.

Believe it or not, it took me quite a while to find a background color that would not make everybody sick or snowblinded and yet still convey and show all of the colors.

  • Netscape uses a 6-digit hexadecimal # to define colors:

  • First two digits - brightness of red (ff0000)

  • Middle two digits - brightness of green (00ff00)

  • Last two digits - brightness of blue (0000ff)

  • Mix red and green - get yellow (ffff00)

  • Mix red and blue - get violet (ff00ff)

  • Mix green and blue - get cyan (00ffff)

  • Mix green, blue, and red - get white (ffffff)

  • Absence of light gives black (000000)

  • Reduce intensity down from ff - change the amount of each in the mix (useful for backgrounds)

  • Dark yellow is brown (805000)

  • Dark violet is purple (600060)

  • Dark cyan is blue-green (005050)

  • Color has hue, intensity, and saturation (805050)

  • We've discussed hue

  • We've discussed intensity

  • Saturation means how much white is mixed in (ff60ff)

  • Saturation means how much white is mixed in (ff90ff)

  • Saturation means how much white is mixed in (ffc0ff)

  • Saturation means how much white is mixed in (fff0ff)

  • Different terminals support different numbers of colors (8fffff)

  • ...this color "should" be different! (but it's not, on my terminal.) (6fffff)

  • To avoid projector problems, use two guns (two colors) or more

  • Blue + yellow paint = green paint

  • Blue + yellow light = blue + red + green light = white light...

  • Consider the physics...

  • The eye has red, green, and blue receptors

  • The brain has red/green, blue/yellow, and black/white processing modules

  • Color is all in the mind

  • Color is a non-trivial subject

  • Bees see different colors than we do (inc. ultraviolet) (flowers are "built" for bees, usually, not people)

  • Color is a complex subject not well understood...

Computers communicate and operate in binary digits 0 and 1; on the other hand, human beings generally use the decimal system with ten digits, from 0 to 9. Other number systems are also used, such as octal with eight digits, from 0 to 7 and hexadecimal (Hex) system with digits from 0 to 15. In the hexadecimal system, digits 10 through 15 are designated as A through F, respectively, to avoid confusion with the decimal numbers 10 to 15.

To make life easy on yourself, I recommend downloading something like Color Browser from Maximized Software, Inc. This utility is easy to use and will create the Hex numbers for the color that you want and it will also save them to or retreive them from the clipboard.

General Web Page Tips

Ok. Just a little bit of advice. As more and more newspapers and magazines and radio stations go online, the internet seems to run slower and slower. Like the competition in the Energizer Bunny adds.

Even though our modems nowadays are blazing fast compared to the 300baud screamers a lot of us started on, (I started with a 1200 baud) life seems to be getting slower. To combat this, try to keep your web pages relatively simple. In other words, don't put 15 animated gifs and 22 banners.

If your web page loads quickly, surfers are more likely to read it. The longer your page takes to load the less likely people are going to be to stay there to read it.
