Danville, Kentucky - 6/07. We were contacted by phone in June 2007 via a computerized voice recording informing us our service will expire at the end of June. Knowing this was incorrect, I proceeded to call the 1-800-TERMINIX phone number. The person that answered the phone told me there was nothing she could do for me. She instructed me to call back and speak with the manager. Believing that Terminix was a first-class, top-notch corporation, I was surprised that I was being sluffed off so casually. I told her that I wish to speak to anyone else with authority there or the accounting department. With that, I was quickly told there is no one else; and when I became upset, I was told again to call back later. With that said, she promptly just hung up on me. Being angry, I called back. Again I was hung up on promptly. I called a third time and remained determined but calm and polite. Again I was hung up on. Finally after calling a fourth time, I was told there is a cell number to call and to wait a minute and she will get it for me. Waiting a minute, finally a man answered and spoke to me inquiring curtly what did I want? I went through the whole explanation again, calmly about the fact we paid, I gave him the date, check number, and stated the check was cashed by their company and cleared. He said so? I said what do you mean, “So?” I said that we were being told we were being terminated at the end of the month and we paid for the remainder of the year! He finally said they will check in to it all and have the sales manager call me back. With that, I said fine. Got on the internet and discovered they are being sued by many people including the government. The point I am trying to make here is they are NOT what they claim to be. They are not a reputable company. I now feel we were fleeced. They are just a company out to take your money and no more than that. We paid out more than three thousand dollars for a service which amounted to a rip-off. I am complaining so that others will beware. They would be better off served to deal with a reputable company. BUYER BEWARE. Things are not necessarily what they seem to be.
Ewing, New Jersey - 5/07. Too bad I didn't read this before I called Terminix. One visit for $199 and never showed again. Oh, one pest control agent showed up when it was raining, said he couldn't do anything. Three appointments later still no show. I’m done.
Quincy, Illinois - 5/07. Never again will I do business with a company like Terminix. The local branch office has the most rude employees you could ever possibly imagine, starting from the techs, the secretary, and right on up to the branch manager who is a fat slob that hides from customers that can’t get results over the phone so they stop in to speak to him directly. I sat in my car and watched him enter the branch; but when I went in, the secretary told me he wasn’t in and wouldn’t be back for a week. This same thing has happened repeatedly, although one time she whispered to me that he was hiding from me and that I should cancel my contract cause the manager had told my technician to use water and glue boards at my house and nothing else. If my technician showed up at all for scheduled appointments, it was one to two hours late; and he never knocked cobwebs down, just walked around the house spraying stuff every 10 or 12 feet and laid a couple of glue boards around. I even saw him spraying the stuff on my cat once, which was one of my complaints that never got listened to. I have taken the advice of the secretary and cancelled my contract and went with a very reliable and highly praised local pest control firm.
Washington DC - 5/07. I would like to file a complaint against Terminix, 855 Brightseat Road, Landover, MD. On June 1, 2006, I contracted with Terminix to rid my home of termites. At that time there was very minimal damage, only signs that I did indeed have termites. I paid them in full and they treated the rear and front of my home explaining that that single treatment would take care of the problem. Three months later, I called them again. I scheduled an appointment since the termites were eating the entire rear of my home. I took off work three different days with appointments where no one showed up. On the fourth appointment they did show up. Their employee said that obviously the treatment did not work however he could not give it another treatment because it was too soon. Within the next month, I had to have the entire rear of the home taken down and replaced. I now have termites again and contacted Terminix for a treatment. My appointment was for today between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Of course, no one showed up at my home. I called them and was told that the appointment was never confirmed with the service department so I would have to reschedule. Once again, I missed a day’s work with no service. I was directed to another number and told that my appointment was for yesterday and not today. I told the lady on the phone that if it was indeed yesterday, which it was not, then they would have left a notice at my door stating that they were there. There was no note. I called another number and was told that the appointment was indeed today but I would have to wait for the service department to call me to explain why they did not come and when they could come in the future. I then called the local branch manager, Jeffery Coe, but he was not available so I left a message for him to call me back. I then called the local service department for existing customers, and no one answered the phone. I then called the number for new customers who want an estimate, and they could not give me any information on how to get in touch with Mr. Coe. I recently paid my annual contract fee of $185.06 to Terminix on April 24. They cashed the check of course so I guess they have no need to live up to their contract. I am at my wit’s end. I cannot keep taking off work for the no-show Terminix people, and I can't wait for the termites to eat my house all over again.
Miami Beach, Florida - 5/07. Not only is Terminix not coming to the property to reassess their work guaranteed from last year but Maxx Properties managing an apartment building I have lived in for the past 6 years. I am now living in a one-bedroom because my 3 and 4 year old daughters are unable to sleep in their room. Formosa termites have eaten their way through a one bedroom apartment that is adjacent to my children’s room and have come out in our wall. Can someone please help me?
? - 4/07. I'm in the process of finding out my legal rights, if any. I'm under a $250.000 termite bond. The company will not reveal the source of bond or who the underwriter is of such a bond. I've been bonded since 1980. Terminex has threatened me; and the inspectors of my property took evidence back, and they were never seen again.
Stafford, Virginia - 4/07. Never again will I sign on with Terminex. Three years of unkept appointments, unanswered calls, no followup on pest concerns, and very poor service. We are military and rest assured we will tell all to avoid this company.
? - 3/07 - I have filed complaints concerning Terminex's faulty work and deceptive practices. They are unbelievably non responsive to complaints.
Cayucos, California - 3/07. Terminix inspected for termites and fumigated the house in January 2007. They said they had their own construction crew that would do all the construction that was in their report. Terminix agreed that the porch and other construction would be replaced exactly as it was. They agreed to use the same material and same quality of construction. We have not found that to be the case. Terminix used the cheapest wood, substandard construction, and have not completed the project as they have reported. It looks like they gave wood, nails, and hammers to 12 year olds and told them to build a porch. We received one billing statement in February 2007. The bill says the work was completed, and it was not. We gave Terminix (Santa Maria, California) a chance to correct this problem; they did not do that. Due to the lack of completion and the continued use of cheap wood and substandard quality of work, we requested Terminix stop all work at the house. We requested a full investigation of the fumigation and quality of construction to be done by the Structural Pest Control Board. We requested Terminix refund the monies they have been paid, which is over $9,000. We will use that money to start over again with a different company, have a new pest inspection, and build a new porch using a top-quality construction company. We received a third statement from Terminix stating that the work was completed and requesting payment in full. This statement also says that we are 30-60 days late with payment. The work is not completed.
Poughkeepsie, New York - 3/07. As I was in the process of remodeling my home, I found evidence of termite damage in the rear addition. For peace of mind, I thought it would be wise to put some sort of termite protection in the rear of the house to prevent future damage. We were in the process of tearing down the entire back wall and rebuilding from the foundation up with pressure treated lumber. When the Terminix rep arrived here, I showed him the damage and wanted to protect the back. (His name is Robert Greco.) He advised me that he would not warranty the house against damage unless he put traps around the entire house. There has never been any sign of termites or damage in the front of the house; but after some consideration, I decided to let him proceed as long as I was going to get full coverage against future damage. He again told me that if ever there was termite damage to my home, I would be covered and they would repair; replace etc., whatever had to be done to restore my home. He then measured the perimeter of the house and came up with $1600 + tax to put the traps out. I agreed, although I knew that doing the front was not necessary or what I had asked for. He then sat at my dining table and wrote a contract which I did not see. When he finished, he called (I believe he said Helen) and said that everything that we had discussed was approved. All that I had to do was to sign the bottom. He shoved the contract at me and said sign here. I did and he got my credit card, called it in, and shoved the paperwork into a folder and left.
When the building inspector came about three weeks later to approve my construction to get a final CO, he asked about the traps. I told him the story, and he advised me that Terminix would want a yearly fee for the warranty. I assured him that that was not true because I was totally protected by putting the traps around the entire house, that there was no fee. It was then that I called Terminix and asked what was going on. They told me that there was a yearly fee of $400 to have that warranty. I assured the lady on the phone that it was not true, just ask the salesman who sold me this job. At this point, she asked me if I read the contract. I told her no that there was no need to. The salesman told me everything that I had to know and I agreed to what he said. Turned out, he lied. She assured me that I would not get a penny back that I should have read the contract. I told her, that if I did read that entire contract, we would probably still be here. I told her that for termites to eat down new construction might take 20 years, which she agreed. I asked her why they even put down the traps. If I pay you $400 per year times 20 years it would be $8000.00 plus the $1600.00 I already paid would be $9600.00. To replace my back wall again could be $1,500.00 to $2,000.00. They didn’t need traps with an income like that. I asked why the salesman had to lie to me to get the job. She again said it was entirely my fault for not reading the contract. I have never been a victim of fraud and did not know exactly what to do. A friend of mine told me that he had a similar problem and the credit card company helped. I called my credit card company, and they put a hold on the funds. Later they called me and stated that Terminix did not fight for the money and that it would be credited to my account. About two weeks later, I received a letter from their collection agency and a nasty call informing me that I have to pay the collection agency in full. I refuse, so I have to see where it goes from here.
