 Terminix Complaints

It’s easy to dismiss a court case or a complaint from a consumer, employee, or state agency against Terminix or its parent company, ServiceMaster, as just an isolated case; but they are not isolated cases.  There is no centralized place to report them; and until this web site, nobody was publicly reporting them.

Thanks to each of the people who have courageously submitted their complaints against Terminix, the complaints can no longer be dismissed as “isolated incidents;” and this web site has been credited with helping attorneys prepare for litigation, with helping potential investors avoid what could be a costly mistake, and with providing consumers with invaluable information.

If you have a complaint against Terminix or ServiceMaster, please submit your complaint here to emu@syix.com.  In the subject line, put “Terminix Complaint” or “ServiceMaster Complaint” and include the name of the state in which the incident occurred.  Any message with profanities will not be posted.  You must “sign” and verify your submission by including your e-mail address, which will not be posted.

Federal Trade Commission.  Months ago, I filed a complaint with the FTC at their e-mail address for filing consumer complaints, consumerline@ftc.gov.  Don’t, however, expect a response. Although you probably will not receive even so much as an acknowledgement that they’ve received anything, you may send questions or complaints to the Consumer Response Center, Federal Trade Commission, Washington, DC  20580.  According to the FTC, they cannot resolve individual disputes; however, the information you provide may indicate a pattern of possible law violations requiring action by the Commission.

National Fraud Information Center (NFIC) at 1-800-876-7060, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. EST, Monday - Friday.  The NFIC is a private nonprofit organization that operates a consumer hotline to provide service and assistance in filing complaints.  NFIC helps the FTC and the state Attorneys General by entering complaints into a computerized database to help track and identify fraud operators.

The complaints from consumers and employees on the following pages are just some of the complaints submitted to Terminix - Consumer Alert!  The information contained in the complaints is unverified.  You can judge for yourself if you believe them, as I do, and whether or not you believe Terminix’s advertising slogan, “No Bugs, No Hassles,” and their guarantee (at the time this web site was created), “At Terminix, we make customer service our highest priority.  If you ever encounter a question or problem, we’ll do everything possible to solve it quickly and to your complete satisfaction.”  Or do you think, as I do, that Terminix’s claims are fraudulent, false advertising to deliberately mislead consumers, investors, and potential franchise owners?

Terminix’s guarantee:

Old Guarantee

At Terminix, we make customer service our highest priority.  If you ever encounter a question or problem, we’ll do everything possible to solve it quickly and to your complete satisfaction.

New Guarantee

We will keep working until you are satisfied, or we will credit the cost of your last service.

Webmaster Note:  For those who have had years of Terminix service and termite treatments and then discover their homes are extensively damaged by termites, or for those who find themselves or a loved one with chronic health problems as a result of “misapplications,” I’ll bet they are relieved to know they can get a credit on their last month’s service!

Effective Date:  “In answer to your question about the transition of old vs. new guarantee...  I went to work briefly for Terminix in October 1997 as one of the termite inspectors and sales reps.  At the time I started, Terminix was in the process of using up their stock of old guarantee contracts and beginning to phase in the new ones.  It’s not a question of what date Terminix switched over, it’s a question of when they completed phasing in the new contracts.  I was ordered to use up the old contracts before I could use the boxes of new contracts.  Printing costs, you know!  Having worked for three years for Orkin before Terminix, Orkin ordered us to stop using the old contracts in June of 1997 and start using the new guarantees immediately.”

Terminix’s new “guarantee” appears to be yet another company protection clause, not a customer guarantee.  However, not even I can consider the new “guarantee” to be fraudulent, false advertising -- unless, of course, we learn dissatisfied customers don’t get a credit for their last service.  And who would possibly enter into binding arbitration, as I have been informed is required under Terminix’s contracts if there is any dispute, to recover a credit for their last service?

As far as the “No Bugs. No Hassles” slogan...
