Early Aviation History In The Yuba - Sutter Area
Beginning with the birth of John Montgomery in Yuba City in 1858, aviation has played and important part in our area history. Montgomery went on to make the first controlled wing flight on August 28, 1883 from a hilltop in San Diego almost 20 years before the Wright brother's historic flight. The Yuba-Sutter area has had its share of early aviators, barnstormers, aerodromes, airplanes, early agricultural flying and military airbases. All of these facets of local aviation history will be portrayed when the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County presents a new exhibit called "Taking Off." The exhibit was created by the museum with the help of guest curator Allen Herr. The exhibit opens Friday June 1st., 2001 and will remain at the museum through September 9th, 2001.
Three summer programs will accompany the exhibit. On Thursday, June 14, 2001 at 7:30 p.m., Barbara Hennigan will present a slide show about Thaddeus Kerns "Boy Aviator". On Thursday, July 12, 2001 at 7:30 p.m., Karen Angel will present a program about her grandfather and adventurer Jimmie Angel. And on Wednesday, July 18, 2001 at 1:00 p.m., we will feature our summer children's program with an aviation theme. Children of all ages are welcome. Admission is free to all museum programs.
