Viruses.
Ugh, we have them all the time, we get new ones that require our
computers to be psychic. Our Virus Scanning programs have to be
able to detect viruses that haven't been released yet! What a pain.
BUT, there is something you can do about viruses, all by yourself,
using software you probably already have on your computers! Following
are some screen shots of different things you will need, and how
to make the changes you need to make, to stop the most common viruses,
those that take over your computer and start sending out email for
you. This method will stop you from accepting any viruses that are
attached and executable. Also, it will stop you from accidentally
opening infected files inside of the email program.
NOTE
occasionally you will recieve an attachment from someone that you
want to recieve, it will not show up, because the type of attachment
is not safe. Have the person send you the attachment "zipped"
and things will be fine.
Here
is what you do!
First off, find and start Outlook Express on your computer. Its
already there, just open it up by clicking on the "Outlook
Express" icon. Open the "Help" button on top, then
click on the "About Microsoft Outlook Express" button.

At
this time you will get this screen, we are looking for the "6"
to show up. If you have anything else BUT "6", stop here,
and go to the Windows
Update site and upgrade to Microsoft Internet Explorer 6. (for
further information about Windows Update, look at Start, then click
on Windows Update)

Since
you HAVE "6", now take a look at that top menu again,
it should have a "Tools" option, click on it, then click
on the "Options" on the bottom...

Now
we finally get to do the actual meat of the process. Note that Microsoft
has attempted to add some rudementary virus protection into the
software, but have convieniently left it turned off. Just turn it
on! Make your screen look just like this, and click "OK"
and you will no longer recieve "dangerous" attachments.
