This is a short version on how to use NT's "RAS" system to connect to the internet.  It makes a LOT of assumptions, the biggest is that you are not using the NT "Remote Access Services" for anything but Internet Access.

Lets Get Started!

1.  IMPORTANT.   Login to your NT computer as "Administrator" or whatever name actually has "Administrator" privledges on your computer.  If you can't, or don't know how to do this, stop now, you can't setup Internet Access on this computer.  Find the person that setup this computer and get that password and then get started again.

2.  Go to "My Computer" and then "Dial-Up Networking".  Your computer should at this time start a "Wizard" that will install the necessary files to add Internet Access to your NT computer.  Follow the graphics below, in order, for each step of this process...

IF THE WIZARD didn't run, or you don't see this graphic, jump on down to the next part as you probably have "RAS" installed on this computer already.

First thing you will get is a screen telling you you are about to install Dial-Up Networking, since you know that already, click the next button, and get this...

Now of course, you are going to have to find your CD, and wait a bit, it will write a LOT of files but when its all done, you get this (probably)....  At this point, you should see your modem listed, but if its not, hit the "Install Modem" button, and run THAT wizard, then return here.

After clicking "OK", you get finally down to setting up this whole thing.

NTWizard4.jpg (18773 bytes)

At this time, hit the Continue button, and make sure it all looks this way....

NTWizard5.jpg (31284 bytes)

And amazingly enough, you get HERE!

NTWizard6.jpg (14682 bytes)

And of course, its time to reset again....

NTWizard7.jpg (14757 bytes)

And now, take a look at the rest of thes settings following....

RAS Already Installed

First, lets check things out.  Open "Start" - "Settings" - "Control Panels" then "Network" and make sure "Remote Access Service" is there and is "installed"  Highlight it and hit "Properties" to continue.

NTNetwork1.jpg (30109 bytes)

Now you should see this screen, sort of.   I already have the next step open, so just select your modem (it is YOUR modem right?) and select "Configure" down there on the bottom and the smaller screen you see should pop up.  Make yours look like mine.

NTNetwork2.jpg (31483 bytes)

After Clicking "OK" then select "Network" over there on the right, and make sure yours looks like this.   Now hit OK Twice and lets move to.....

NTNetwork3.jpg (20012 bytes)

"My Computer" - "Dial-Up Networking".  It should look like this, but probably not all filled out.   If you don't see anything in the "Phonebook" section, hit that little down arrow on that line and select whatever is there.  Then open that "More" button, and you should see....

NTDialup1.jpg (29498 bytes)

This screen.  Select "Edit entry..." and you will get....

NTDialup2.jpg (37403 bytes)

This nice screen.  Each of the pages here need to be filled in, on this page make yours look like mine here.

NTDialup3.jpg (29772 bytes)

On this page, after you get this filled out, hit that "TCP/IP Settings" button...

NTDialup4.jpg (25476 bytes)

And make it look like this.  Hit OK to get back to the other page.

NTDialup3a.jpg (24851 bytes)

THIS IS IMPORTANT.  Click ON the "Run this script" button, then select "Generic Login" from the list of scripts there (its the first one).  DON'T CHANGE OR MODIFY IT IN ANYWAY.

NTDialup5.jpg (22475 bytes)

And this is important, make sure your Security page looks exactly like this.

NTDialup6.jpg (24625 bytes)

And for completeness, this is the X.25 page.

NTDialup7.jpg (24462 bytes)

After hitting "OK" you will get the first screen way up there back again, then all you do is hit the "DIAL" and you get this little screen.  Enter your username/password, don't forget to put a "P" before the Username, and make sure "domain" is empty!  Save that password, and click OK.

NTDialup8.jpg (15082 bytes)

Now you should be ONLINE, and running.   There are more options you can play with, even a "RAS Monitor" someplace on your computer to watch the actual bytes moving around, but basically at this point, you just need to hit "Internet Explorer" and away you go!
