Using Windows 98 with the internet is VERY easy to do, but there are times when things just don't seem right, and we have found that occasionally one program or another with try to "help" you set things up, when in fact, things just get "stupid" on you. These screens just affect the "connection" part of your internet connection, and are not designed to be all inclusive of any problems you might be having. Remember, SYIX is here to help, you can call us, or just come down to the office with your computer and we will get things right for you!
On these screens are examples of a working Win98 system, using a standard Modem to dial-in to the Internet. Compare them to your system, see what you should change!
First off, lets take a look at the "Control Panels", found under the "Start" menu, then Settings. Open up "Network" as shown in the red circle.

Now you should see a screen like this one, find and highlight the "TCP/IP" line, and hit the "Properties" button.

Now you get a nice set of screens with a number of tabs on them, I am going to show you the ones that matter, you can ignore the rest of them. A warning message may pop up when you first hit the properties button, just say OK, and continue along.

Now hit "OK" a couple of times, and wait for your computer to reboot (if it asks you to).
NOW we want to take a look at the actual dialer that you use to connect to SYIX. Easy to do also, just open "My Computer" then open "Dial-Up Networking" Find the SYIX.COM icon, and RIGHT click on the icon. (unless you have your mouse set for left handed use, then hit the Left button). Find "Properties" and click on it.

Now you are in the actual server settings for your dialer, and it should look about like this. NOTE!!! The phone number should be correct for where you live, this number is for people local to Yuba City. And the modem shown on the bottom will be different, the modem your computer has installed should be here.

Now we need to take a look at the "Server Types" tab, make yours look like this one!

Once you have that part done, Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button, you will get this screen.

Make things look like this, and click the "OK" buttons until you are out and working again. At this time, things are setup for the best network performance, I suggest you take a look at the "SQUID" setup pages, and add that to the Internet control panel. It helps a lot! AND your modem is probably not updated to the currently fastest version, take a look at this page and find your modem on the list, and get the latest modem code for it!
Any questions? Please feel free to ask!
