California Prune Festival

For many who came to California in the Gold Rush, fortune was found in the rich soils of the Sacramento valley, not in the riverbeds of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. A single year's agricultural production in California exceeds the value of all the gold ever taken out of California mines and rivers.

In Mission San Jose in 1856, French viticulturalist Louis Peller grafted plum cuttings from the district of Agen in France. Their experiment led to the establishment of the rich California prune industry. Today, California produces about 70 percent of the world's prunes.

Almost one-third of California's plum acreage is in Yuba and Sutter counties. The area claims the title of Prune Capital of the World.

The California Prune Festival, established in 1988, has become a source of regional pride with a mission to provide family entertainment, give non-profit and charitable organizations the opportunity to earn funds for their programs, to create unity in the community and, of course, to promote the prune, and other commodities produced in the Yuba Sutter area.
