Contested
Eden : California Before the Gold Rush (California
History Sesquicentennial Series)
- Ramon A. Gutierrez (Editor), Richard J. Orsi (Editor)
/ Paperback / Published 1998 - Paperback, 395 pages.
Published by Univ California Press. As the first of a
projected four-volume collection that will portray the
complete history of California, Contested Eden contains a
dozen essays ranging from prehistory to 1848. Because it
is often common to think of California's history as
beginning with the Gold Rush, this text provides a
welcome look at the rich background of the most populous
state. It is sure to be of interest both to academic and
novice historians. Contested Eden begins with an
examination of California's natural history, and proceeds
in a roughly chronological fashion through the Indian
settlements, the conquest by Spain, the incursions of
Russian traders, the settlers who came overland from the
United States, and the role of California in the war
between the U.S. and Mexico. Other essays tackle themes
such as cultural conflicts and gender roles. On occasion
the writing lapses into academic jargon, but for the most
part the pieces are lucid and highly informative.

Digger

Published 1997. Stanley's reaccounts the barbarous acts

Forty-Niners : Tennesseans and the California Gold
Rush
- Walter T. Durham / Hardcover / 296 pages. Published
1997 - his book covers in capsulated form the methods
Tennesseans used to get to the California Gold Rush,
naming names and parties as well as routes, but not the
entire diaries. It would be very helpful for anyone doing
genealogy whose ancestors came from Tennessee to
California. Of particular interest to me was how many of
them went into politics including Peter Burnett, the
First American Governor, plus Wm. Gwin, the first 6 year
Senator and many others. It is meticulously researched.
