2024/2025 email server forced upgrade

Details

April 18
SPAM is filtered, tagged and thrown in the inbox.  Not ideal but it works for now
Really bad SPAM from known sources never makes it to the inbox
Viruses are disposed of.
IMAP is preferred still, but not demanded.
TLS or STARTTLS on the security stuff if you are looking at those settings.
More to follow!

2/2/25
UPDATES:
1.  Viruses are being caught and dumped into the null space.  So less of those "we're watching you" emails should be appearing.
2.  SPAM is starting to be handled, its slow to get those databases filled, and for now they are just being tagged as ***SPAM***.  You should probably let me know if you get something tagged that shouldn't be.  All mail here needs to be moved to a new storage format and then the spam mail can be just dumped in "Junk" instead of left in the inbox.  Another huge project and it will be happening when I can assure it happens safely.
3.  Since SSL is dead, and TLS is new and shiney, thats coming up.  No worries, this will be handled individually as needed.  If I don't email you or call you, don't worry about it.

I'm doing this slowly so I can try to keep the call/email issues manageable, and also so something I do doesn't just dump everyones mail into noplace.  Be patient with me, I'll get it all done soon.

Wanted to say, the SSL/TLS and other acronym stuff is allowing us to be sure all email is encrypted from your fingers to the recievers screen.  No chance anyone in some data center someplace (offshore data centers can be manned by anyone)  can read your email.

Hello There!

Over the last few days I have been working on the SYIX.COM mail server, moving it to a new machine, adding capacity, making it more efficient, etc.
I didn't plan on doing any of this over the holiday, but of course, computers don't tend to do things on my schedule. But since it has to change, lots of changes are happening at once.

Here are the things that affect you.

1. SPAM and Viruses are arriving untested. Be CAREFUL. See #4 below.

2. SSL/TLS is enabled on all connections. If you mail program asks for it, it will work now. It will be required after a few months.

3. IMAP is preferred so you can keep your phone/table/desktop in sync. If you use POP3 (probably do) don't delete it, just add the account to your system as IMAP and disable the "check this account" settings. Or wait till you get a new computer and just don't setup the POP3 stuff. You can of course continue using POP3 until it quits working later this year.

4. the SPAM filter "Mailguard" didn't survive. Its too outdated, and won't run on a modern server (another reason I delayed this). There will be a different system installed over the next few days, and I'll send out a message explaining it.

5. Outlook sending mail settings should be:
server: mail.syix.com
port: 465
Encyption method: SSL/TLS

6. Thunderbird sending mail settings should be:
server: mail.syix.com
port: 465
Connection Security: SSL/TLS

7. IPhone/IPad should have SSL enabled on incoming and outgoing.

If things are working for you today, please resist changing things. I have tried to keep the old settings working where the software allows me to. Outlook and Thunderbird were kinda picky, most things just worked.

Questions or not working for you?
1. Send an email (if possible) to support@syix.com
2. Text me at 530.755.1751
3. Call me at 530.755.1751
www.syix.com has a few notes from the last weekend, I'll post this there too.

Thanks for hanging in there with me!

If SYIX Mailguard is keeping you are arms length, this is the fix:

  1. Open Mozilla Firefox   (to download use this, https://getfirefox.com)
  2. on the address bar (very top of the screen), type "about:config" and hit enter
  3. Click the "accept..." bar
  4. On the Search Preference Name box, type "security.tls.version.enable-deprecated"  (or just tls, it gets you close)
  5. Double Click on the line "security.tls.version.enable-deprecated", It should become BOLD and the false should change to true, and then close the screen, Mailguard will open again.
If you and Mailguard are just fine today, ignore all this

Windows 11 - October 5, 2021

Windows 11 Release October 5

So, Windows has an upgrade!  Should YOU care?  Probably not.  The system requirements are quite a bit different from before, and other than it breaking the start menu, I can't see any reason at this time to upgrade.  Perhaps after a bit of time passes, but I guarantee you that most of you won't be able to easily upgrade to this one, it requires a working Trusted Platform Module, which is usually an extra part added onto your computers Motherboard.

So, SYIX recommends for now, please don't upgrade to Windows 11, lets see how it works out for a while first.  Trust me, you aren't going to miss anything if you don't

mail.syix.com TLS errors

Details

I'm working on it really.  That "TLS 1.0" insecure stuff.  Really am.

TEMPORARY FIX:
Google Chrome

1.  Open this link:   https://mail.syix.com/mail/login.php
2.  On the top of the screen, it says in red letters, "Not secure", click on it, then click on "Site Settings"
3.  On this screen, on the right side, you should see "  <- mail.syix.com"
Scroll way down, near the bottom of this long list, find Insecure Content, and set it at Allow instead of Block
4.  Click back on the Mailguard tab, it should have a button to reload the page, and away you go.
(further experiments show this doesn't always work)  (seems to always work on Firefox)

Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox
2.  At the top, next to the magnifying glass, clear the screen and type:  about:config
     Hit enter
3.  Click the "accept the risk and continue" button
4.  Next to the new magnifying glass, type "TLS"
5.  Look down the list, find "security.tls.version.enable-deprecated".
6.  Click that line, it should turn dark colored.  Close the screen and restart Firefox.  Done.

Microsoft Edge (latest newest version 84)

1.  Install Firefox and use it.  :-)
2.  Like Edge better?  Follow the Google Chrome instructions, but it requires a restart to work.

The TLS 1.0 1.1 and 1.2 (soon 1.3) stuff will get fixed soon, I promise, but these steps will make it easier for you in the mean time.

So, for months I have had a note on the top of www.syix.com that it was moving here "soon".  So, today it did!

The security warnings from Firefox prompted me to move away from the old site finally, so this is a permanent thing

If there is something really really wrong, let me know please!   support@syix.com
